A. Your ratings
Up to 25 conditions. “Arm” means the whole upper extremity (shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand). “Leg” means the whole lower extremity (hip, knee, ankle, foot).
B. Bilateral factor
Tag conditions as left/right arm or leg above if the bilateral factor may apply to you.
C. Your dependents
Dependents only change your compensation at 30% or higher. At 10% and 20%, everyone gets the same rate.
D. One more question (optional)

A 0% rating doesn't come with monthly compensation, but can still unlock other benefits.
You're at 0 (rounds to 0%). You'd need 5 to round up to 10%.

What would one more rating do?

The additional condition is not tagged as an arm or leg.

How VA math works
Ratings are combined from highest to lowest using the percentage that remains unaffected, rather than simply added. Each combination is rounded half up to a whole number. Zero-percent conditions are listed but do not change the combination.
For example, 50% + 30% = 65 → 70%. A 40% rating combined with 20% gives 52 → 50%. Rounding to the nearest 10 happens only once, at the end; a value ending in 5 rounds up. A single 100% rating produces a 100% combined rating.
See 38 CFR 4.25, Combined Ratings Table. This estimate does not determine service connection, effective dates, special monthly compensation, offsets or other adjustments to an actual award.
What is the bilateral factor?
When applicable, paired arm or leg ratings are combined first, then 10% of their combined value is added. For example, 10% + 10% → 19 → 21 after adding 1.9 and rounding half up. The resulting value is treated as one rating before combining other conditions.
This calculator applies the factor only when you turn it on. It compares valid smaller paired groups and the calculation without the factor to retain the highest combined value. See 38 CFR 4.26. Tag only qualifying arm and leg conditions; this tool does not determine whether a condition qualifies.

Frequently asked questions
How does VA combine disability ratings?
VA combines ratings from highest to lowest against the remaining unaffected percentage, rounding each combination to a whole number. The final combined value is rounded once to the nearest 10, with 5 rounding up.
Why doesn’t 50% + 30% equal 80%?
After a 50% rating, 50% remains. A 30% rating applies to that remaining 50%, adding 15 points: 50 + 15 = 65, which rounds to 70%.
What is the bilateral factor?
For qualifying compensable conditions affecting both arms or both legs, VA combines the paired ratings and adds 10% of that combined value before combining other conditions. The most favorable valid grouping applies.
How much extra compensation does VA provide for a spouse and children?
Dependent additions begin at a 30% rating and vary by rating and family situation. This calculator uses the 2026 rates effective December 1, 2025; school children and spouse Aid and Attendance have separate additions.
